About Kamakura

Kamakura has a history dating back thousands of years. The Kamakura Period (1185 – 1333) saw the rise of the samurai caste and the establishment of feudalism in Japan. The main setting of this important part of Japan’s history was centred just 500 meters down the street from this block of land, in an area where Minamoto no Yoritomo built his mansion and held his government offices.

The beachside city rose to prominence as a resort area in the late 1800s. It was a popular holiday destination for foreigners living in Yokohama’s foreigner settlement. After the opening of the Yokosuka Train Line in 1889, many wealthy Japanese nobles began to build expansive and luxurious western and traditional-style holiday villas in the area. Unfortunately many of the original villas were destroyed in the 1923 Kanto earthquake, although a small number still survive today.

The resident population of Kamakura was 173,000 in 2015. In 2013, the city had 23 million visitors.

Kamakura is approximately an hour by train from Shibuya, and 26 minutes from Yokohama Station.
