NTT Urban Development Corporation will start work on the Harajuku Station Front Project later this year. The 5,000 sqm site is located in a prime position directly across the street from Harajuku Station and the greenery of Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park. This is likely become a retail and residential landmark building.
The building will be designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito of Toyo Ito Associates. Completion is scheduled for spring 2020.
The 55 billion Yen (495 million USD) project includes redeveloping several older buildings into one new 10-storey mixed-use building containing retail on the lower floors and rental apartments on the upper floors. West-facing apartments on the higher floors will enjoy enviable views of Yoyogi Park and Meiji Shrine.
Both the vintage Harajuku Apartments (1958) and Harajuku Daiichi Mansions (1979) buildings will be demolished.
