|Land with existing structure (house)
This is large, traditional Japanese-style home located in an elevated mountain-side position with over an acre of freehold land and forest. It is just 600 meters from the sandy beach in the historic oceanside town of Hayama.
The age of the house is unknown, although it could possibly be over 80 years old. This could place its construction right around the time that many of Japan’s wealthy industrialists and nobles were busy building lavish and grand holiday homes around the Imperial Villa.
The 2-storey home is over 230 square meters in size and has an additional 81 square meter single-storey residence.
There have been plans to demolish the old home and subdivide the lot, but for now the house remains and is currently being used as a holiday rental with rates starting from 195,000 Yen per week.
Depending on the weather, it may be possible to see Mt. Fuji and Sagami Bay from parts of the house.
The land is approximately 30 meters above sea level and outside of the town’s tsunami hazard risk zone.
It is approximately 5 km, or a 20 minute drive from Zushi Station. From Zushi Station it is possible to travel direct to Shimbashi Station in central Tokyo in 59 minutes.
The property is about 60 km south of Tokyo. Driving from central Tokyo to this property is approximately 1hr 10mins by car, depending on traffic conditions.
Hayama is a relatively small beachside town in the Shonan area and is 5km south of Zushi and 8km south of Kamakura.
The southern end of Hayama is an especially wealthy and historic vacation home area. It became popular as a resort area after essentially being discovered by two foreigners in the 1880s – the Italian Minister of Legation and a German Doctor who was highly trusted by Emperor Meiji. In 1894, the Imperial Family built their Hayama Imperial Villa, and the status of the area was lifted immediately. Wealthy nobles and industrialists started to build their own holiday villas around the Imperial Villa.
By 1935 there were 432 villas in the town. Today, only a small number of these grand historic homes remain.
The town’s population has been slowly growing. In 1970, there were 19,609 residents. In 2000, the population was 30,413. In October 2016 the population was 32,109.
