Blink and you’ll miss it. The Tadao Ando-designed house for sale in the heart of Shibuya went under offer last week.
|SOLD||3 Bedrooms + 1 Bathroom + Garage|
Shoto, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
*This house sold in November 2018 and is no longer available*
This is a three bedroom contemporary home designed by famed Japanese architect Tadao Ando and located in Shibuya’s exclusive residential neighborhood of Shoto.
The split-level home includes a garage parking space, separate living and dining rooms on the top floor, and three bedrooms and bathroom on the lower floor. The interior was updated in October 2018 with new wall re-sealing, partial balcony re-waterproofing, air-conditioner replacements, new garage shutter door, new kitchen, new hot water system and new intercom.
A former privately-owned guesthouse designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando has been converted into a luxury, boutique hotel.
The Setouchi Retreat Aonagi opened its doors on December 20, 2015. Described as a ‘small, luxury hotel’, the contemporary concrete and glass building contains just seven guest suites ranging from 100 ~ 150 sqm (1,076 ~ 1,614 sq.ft) in size. The design, which is true to Ando’s style, is bold yet minimal, and makes the most of the views over the Seto Inland Sea.
The 6-storey building was built in 1998 as the Elleair Matsuyama Guesthouse and Museum of Art. The museum was built to display artwork held by the Daio Paper company, including pieces by Marc Chagall and Marie Laurencin. While the museum was previously open to the public, the adjoining guest house was for private guests only.

A contemporary residence designed by famed architect Tadao Ando is currently listed for sale. The 4-bedroom home is located in the trendy Daikanyama neighbourhood and is a 15 minute walk from Shibuya Station.
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando’s designs are notable both in Japan and overseas. Although he has designed a number of houses in the Osaka/Kansai area, there are only a small number of his residences in the Tokyo area. It is very unusual for us to see homes for sale in central Tokyo that have been designed by this caliber of architect, and the opportunity to live in one of Ando’s residences is something afforded to only a small number of people.
The concrete and glass home has a stark and imposing curved exterior finished in Ando’s trademark exposed concrete. The home was designed as part of Ando’s ‘light and shadow’ series of projects carried out in the early 1990s. It was carefully designed and constructed over a three year period between 1991 and 1993.
