Happo-en

The former residence of Fusanosuke Kuhara with Grand Hills Shirokanedai visible in the background.

In the Edo period this site was originally the mansion of Okubo Hikozaemon. It later became the Daimyo residence for the Satsuma Domain, then the villa for the Shimazu clan. In the Meiji period it was the home of Seiichiro Shibusawa, an industrialist and cousin of Eiichi Shibusawa, the ‘father of Japanese capitalism’ and founder of what is now Mizuho Bank. The current building and 40,000 sqm grounds were created in 1915 for Fusanosuke Kuhara, entrepreneur and politician. After WWII, Kuhara approached converted his home into a traditional Japanese restaurant that would appeal to foreign visitors.
